Once the fascist regime dissolved (July 25th) the government and King clumsily tried to free Italy from the alliance with the Nazis, who reacted by occupying the country, disarming, and deporting the army. In the general disorientation, the public administration and the armed forces collapsed. Only some few isolated units resisted. For examp le, the Eighth Artillery Regiment under reconstruction in Verona.
